Metallized BOPP Film: Tear Tape Integration

Oct 27,2026 | FOSHAN CAILONG METALLIC PACKAGING MATERIAL CO.,LTD

A tear tape can make a package easier to open, but only if its force reaches the intended path through the wrapper. Buyers considering Metallized BOPP Film should evaluate the tape and finished laminate together. A strong incoming web or good aluminum adhesion does not establish that the tape will initiate a clean opening, remain attached or guide the tear around the desired section.

Cailong positions its barrier BOPP material in Cailong's film portfolio for oxygen and moisture protection and for use in laminate constructions. The supplied brochure also includes metallized BOPP. These sources support evaluating the film as a barrier component. They do not identify a qualified tear-tape system, application setting or guaranteed opening force for a customer's completed wrapper.

Draw the opening path before choosing tape

Start with the pack drawing and identify where the consumer grips, which part should separate and what remains after opening. Mark the tape, its start feature and every seam it crosses. A tape that works on a simple sleeve may encounter a different load path in a folded or gusseted package. The material name alone cannot define that difference.

Clarify whether the tape is intended to split one wall, remove a band or help release another closure. Each function creates a different acceptance question. The product team should agree on the desired opened shape, including loose fragments and remaining sharp edges where relevant. This avoids approving an easy first pull that leaves the consumer unable to complete the intended opening.

Identify the tape's attachment surface

The tape may contact the outer web, the sealant side or another specified surface, depending on the construction. Record that interface explicitly. A tape adhesive suitable for one exposed layer cannot be assumed suitable for the other side of a laminate. The metallized component may be buried within the structure and never contact the tape directly.

This is why aluminum-layer adhesion and tape attachment require separate evidence. Cailong's metallized BOPP description discusses attachment of the deposited metal to its film substrate. The tape trial concerns an additional interface selected by the converter. Both may influence a failure investigation, but a result for the metal layer cannot be relabeled as a tape-bond result.

Observe what fails during the pull

If the tape lifts away without opening the package, inspect the surfaces left behind. If it removes only an outer layer, examine whether separation occurred within the laminate. If the tape remains attached while the tear runs away from its path, the opening geometry needs a different review. Record the sequence, rather than reducing every failure to insufficient tape strength.

Keep specimens from incomplete openings. Their layer arrangement can provide information that a final force number misses. Identify the tape start position, pull direction and package orientation. A force measurement is most useful when its curve or recorded result can be connected to the visible events that produced it, including initiation and passage through seams.

Include the applied tape in converting trials

Define when the tape is introduced and which subsequent operations it experiences. Printing, lamination, forming and sealing may place different demands on the tape assembly. Use the intended sequence when preparing production samples. A manually attached strip on an already finished pouch can screen an idea but may not represent the bond or placement produced by the machine.

Record tape position and its variation along the web. A slight shift may place the start feature against a fold or move the tape across a seal. Compare the actual geometry rather than assuming that every roll section receives the nominal drawing arrangement. Tape guidance and film guidance are related process controls, but they should remain separately identifiable during diagnosis.

Evaluate opening after the relevant storage

Opening on the day of conversion may not represent what consumers receive. Use the storage and distribution conditions required by the application and retain fresh controls. Record whether the tape bond, laminate or initiation feature changes after the agreed exposure. The product information does not establish a universal storage duration or opening-force retention value for a tape-equipped package.

Use filled packs when their contents affect wall support or the way a user holds the package. Keep the product quantity and pack dimensions consistent across candidate constructions. If a sample opens only while laid flat on a bench, assess whether that motion represents normal use. The opening system should be evaluated in a realistic handling arrangement.

Preserve barrier before intentional opening

The unopened package still needs to protect its contents. Examine the tape start and any related cuts or scores to determine whether the opening feature compromises integrity before use. Do not assume that an accessible tab requires damage through the barrier layer. The construction should be designed and tested for its intended opening mechanism.

Test the relevant barrier and leakage requirements on converted packages, separately from consumer opening. A successful tear does not demonstrate intact protection before the pull. Conversely, a pack can retain barrier and still be difficult to open. Keeping these functions separate makes it possible to choose a material and opening design that meet both requirements.

Compare replacement structures with the same opening brief

When metallized BOPP is proposed in place of an existing metallized PET component, retain the customer's opening requirements in the comparison. Do not transfer the old tape settings automatically. The new complete construction may need a different placement or attachment approach. Any claim of improved opening should be based on the same accepted user task and test arrangement.

Send Cailong the laminate drawing, tape location, application sequence and photographs of the observed opening failure. Include the actual tape and adhesive identification so the interfaces can be discussed accurately. Metallized BOPP can then be assessed for its barrier role while the tape system is qualified as part of the pack, with an opening path that the customer can reproduce.
