Heat Seal PET Film: Peelable or Weld Seal?

Oct 21,2026 | FOSHAN CAILONG METALLIC PACKAGING MATERIAL CO.,LTD

Heat Seal PET Film can provide a heat-sealable polyester option for container closures, but heat-sealable does not automatically mean easy to peel. A closure may need to separate cleanly at an interface, split through a designed layer, or remain permanently bonded until the lid is torn. These outcomes require different approval criteria, even when incoming seal-strength results look similar.

Cailong's film portfolio includes heat-sealable PET for bottle and bowl covers and other sealing applications. Its product description supports evaluating a transparent PET closure material. It does not identify a universal easy-peel behavior or guarantee adhesion to every container resin. The opening mode must therefore be established with the actual rim, film orientation and sealing process.

Begin with what the user should experience

Define the intended opening movement. Will the user pull a tab across a small cup, remove a bottle membrane, or tear a permanently bonded cover? State whether the film should remain in one piece and whether fragments or exposed sharp edges would be unacceptable. These details are part of the closure's function, not cosmetic preferences after material approval.

For peelable lidding, distinguish the initial lift from continued peeling. A tab that is difficult to start can frustrate the user even if the average force during the rest of the opening is acceptable. Conversely, an easy start followed by erratic tearing is not controlled opening. Observe the complete event rather than recording only one maximum number.

For a weld-style closure, evaluate the intended tearing or opening feature separately. Strong attachment may be appropriate, but the package still needs a practical opening route. A film should not be labelled defective merely because it remains bonded when that was the design requirement.

Inspect where the seal actually fails

After opening, examine both the lid and container rim. A clean interface separation, a split within a seal layer, film rupture and rim deformation represent different failure modes. Similar measured forces can arise from any of them. Photograph representative examples and use consistent descriptions in the trial report.

This inspection is particularly valuable when changing container suppliers. A nominally similar cup may use a different rim surface, coating or geometry. If the new combination tears the lid instead of peeling, increasing seal temperature may make the opening problem worse. First determine which interface is holding and which component has become the weakest part.

Retain opened samples as well as numerical results. They allow the film supplier, container maker and converter to discuss the same failure. A purchase specification saying only strong seal gives those parties little guidance about the result the customer wants.

Separate seal compatibility from process settings

Identify the container polymer and any coating at the contact surface. Confirm the heat-sealable face of the PET and check its orientation on the machine. A nominal material name is insufficient if the rim has a separate functional layer or a surface treatment that controls adhesion.

Build a sealing study that varies the parameters relevant to the line, including temperature, contact time and applied pressure. Keep container support and seal-tool alignment stable. The aim is to find a region in which the required closure integrity and opening behavior occur together, rather than a single setting that produces the largest pull force.

The public product table contains an ambiguously labelled heat-sealing entry, so it should not be converted into a peel-strength guarantee or a complete machine recipe. Ask for the selected material's clear test conditions. Trial results on the customer's rim remain necessary even after the incoming data are clarified.

Measure opening and leak resistance separately

An attractive peel trace does not prove that the package is leak-tight. Equally, a package that passes an integrity check may still be unpleasant to open. Evaluate these functions as separate acceptance criteria and then identify the process range that satisfies both.

For mechanical comparison, define specimen width, peel direction, angle, speed and conditioning. A test strip cut from a straight seal is useful for tracking consistency, but it does not recreate every part of opening a shaped container. Include full-container opening trials to capture corners, changes in rim direction and tab geometry.

Assess packages after the relevant storage and handling exposure. Opening behavior immediately after sealing may differ from the behavior at the time of use. The study should determine whether such a change occurs in the chosen combination; no universal aging trend should be assumed from the PET base alone.

Use the tab and rim to support the material

A tab needs enough accessible area for the intended grip. It should not be trapped by a secondary cover or positioned where the user must bend the container to reach it. When opening failures cluster near the starting point, investigate the tab design before changing the entire sealing layer.

Rim flatness and seal width also influence the physical opening path. Local tool pressure or a distorted flange can produce regions that behave differently around one container. Inspect the perimeter after sealing and compare the locations of opening spikes with visible seal features. This can distinguish a machine or container problem from a film selection problem.

For line approval, include samples from the beginning, middle and end of a representative run. This can reveal whether warm-up or changing container supply affects the opening mode. Record the cause of any rejected sample instead of averaging a torn lid together with cleanly peeled lids.

A candidate PET closure is worth pursuing when it provides the required transparency and conversion behavior while the complete closure meets its opening brief. Request enough sample material for a process study, full-container trials and aged-package checks. The useful purchasing question is not simply how strongly the film seals. It is whether the film and rim produce a consistent, intact closure that opens in the way the customer has deliberately specified.
