Yarn Grade Metallized PET Film: Film or Yarn?

Oct 26,2026 | FOSHAN CAILONG METALLIC PACKAGING MATERIAL CO.,LTD

A quotation for Yarn Grade Metallized PET Film can look attractive beside a finished metallic yarn quotation, but the two purchases may stop at different stages of production. One can supply a metallized web for further conversion, while the other supplies a yarn prepared for a specified textile process. Before comparing prices, define which form the factory actually needs and which operations it can perform.

The yarn-grade product in Cailong's film portfolio is described as metallized PET film that can be slit into colorful filaments. Listed applications include weaving, knitwear, embroidery, lace and decorative products. That positioning identifies the film as an input to textile conversion. It does not establish that any roll ordered from the page is already a finished yarn suitable for every loom or embroidery machine.

Locate the handover point

Start with a simple production map. Does the buyer need a wide roll, narrow slit strips, a supported construction, or a finished package of yarn? Identify who performs each conversion and who approves the resulting material. If the supplier is quoting only film, subsequent slitting and yarn preparation remain part of the project's cost, technical risk and delivery schedule.

This distinction matters when a textile factory has no film-converting equipment. The correct enquiry may be for a converted yarn supplier rather than a roll-film shipment. Conversely, a metallic-yarn producer may want control over slit width and downstream construction. For that buyer, a suitable incoming film is the relevant purchase, and a finished-yarn quotation may contain processing they intend to carry out themselves.

Read film specifications as film specifications

Cailong's product page lists a 12 µm film option with customization. It also describes gloss, low shrinkage and tensile properties in general terms. These are starting points for discussing the substrate. They do not specify the linear density, twist, supporting yarn, lubrication or package build of a finished textile yarn. Those requirements need separate agreement at the appropriate conversion stage.

Film thickness and strip width both influence the geometry of a slit filament. However, a finished yarn may include other components or processing steps, so its specification cannot be inferred from film thickness alone. Ask for the actual supplied construction. Avoid treating a film gauge as a substitute for the yarn count or linear-density requirement on a textile production order.

Inspect appearance at the final scale

A broad metallic sheet can look different from a narrow strip seen among surrounding fibers. The textile design may expose only small reflective sections, or combine them with a darker supporting yarn. Evaluate color and brightness on the intended converted sample. A large swatch of unconverted film is useful for initial discussion but cannot settle the appearance of an embroidered motif or woven fabric.

Compare samples under the lighting relevant to the application, including the direction in which the finished textile is viewed. Distinguish a change in reflection from a change in color. Record the approved sample and its construction so that later disputes are not reduced to subjective descriptions such as brighter or more metallic. The reference should show what the customer actually intends to manufacture.

Allocate slitting requirements explicitly

For a yarn converter, narrow-strip consistency and clean separation are important questions to investigate. Specify the intended slit format and request trials with the relevant equipment. Inspect whether strips separate cleanly and whether their edges remain suitable through subsequent handling. A claim about tensile strength of the wide film does not by itself qualify the condition of every narrow edge after slitting.

Keep the incoming roll evaluation separate from the converted-strip evaluation. Wrinkles, winding condition or damaged roll edges may affect how much material reaches the slitter in usable form. Slitting settings and blade condition can introduce a different group of defects. Retaining film and strip samples from the same trial helps the two suppliers locate the source of a problem without assigning every break to the base film.

Match the next textile operation

Weaving, embroidery and decorative wrapping place different demands on the converted material. Give the converter the actual equipment and fabric construction rather than requesting a general textile grade. Follow the sample through the operation that will consume it. Record breaks, handling behavior and finished appearance, with enough process information to make a repeat trial comparable.

End-use treatment also belongs in the brief. If the textile will be washed, exposed to perspiration or subjected to another specified treatment, evaluate the completed construction under that requirement. The product page's application list is not evidence of a particular wash-fastness result. Film, color treatment, supporting components and textile construction may all be relevant to what the end customer approves.

Compare cost at a common delivery stage

A price per kilogram of film cannot be compared directly with a price per kilogram of a multi-component yarn as though both contain the same material and processing. State the delivery form, packaging, conversion allowance and accepted output. Include the work needed to turn the quoted item into the material required by the textile machine. Use measured trial output rather than an assumed conversion yield.

Similarly, a low incoming-film price is less useful if the chosen converter cannot produce the required strip consistently. A more expensive film should not be credited with a yield advantage without evidence either. Compare actual lots at the same final specification. This keeps the commercial decision tied to usable textile input rather than an incomplete quotation.

Ask for the sample that answers the question

Send Cailong the desired film gauge, roll or slit format, appearance reference and planned conversion route. If finished yarn is required, state that clearly and confirm whether it is included in the offered supply. The practical objective is an agreed handover point with matching acceptance criteria. Once that is defined, yarn-grade metallized PET can be evaluated for the role it will actually perform.
