Metallized BOPP Film: Slip and Web Feeding

Oct 22,2026 | FOSHAN CAILONG METALLIC PACKAGING MATERIAL CO.,LTD

Metallized BOPP Film can be evaluated for a PP-based barrier laminate, yet a successful barrier trial does not establish stable feeding on the packaging machine. One construction may slip at a drive roller while dragging over a forming surface. Before asking for a generally more slippery film, identify which two surfaces touch at each location and what that contact must accomplish.

Cailong's film portfolio lists high-barrier metallized BOPP for laminated flexible packaging, including a material direction that can reduce reliance on PET-based barrier layers. Its aluminum coating contributes protection and a reflective appearance. The published product information does not provide a universal friction target for every finished laminate or a guarantee of line speed on the customer's equipment.

Draw a contact map of the web path

Follow the actual laminate from unwind through guiding, pulling, forming and sealing. Mark the outside and inside faces, then identify each roller, belt, guide or forming surface that contacts them. The same laminate face can encounter several counter-surfaces with different traction requirements during one machine cycle.

At a driven contact, adequate traction may be needed to transfer motion. At a forming surface, excessive resistance can obstruct movement. A blanket request for low friction can therefore improve one location while making another less stable. The specification should describe the failing contact rather than treat slip as one overall material property.

Keep web tension observations alongside this map. A registration error or unstable advance can involve controls, alignment or tension as well as friction. Locate the point where movement first departs from expectation. This reduces the risk of changing the barrier material to compensate for a mechanical or control problem elsewhere.

Identify which film surface remains exposed

In a laminated pouch, the metallized BOPP may sit inside the wall rather than touch the machine directly. Printing, an outer web or an inner sealant can become the actual contact surface. Purchasing friction data for the buried barrier layer alone will not establish the feeding behavior of those exposed layers.

Document the proposed structure from outside to inside and identify the coating orientation. A candidate PP laminate may use an outer printable web, the metallized barrier layer and a selected PP sealing film. Such a structure still requires converter confirmation; the polymer family does not automatically qualify the complete package as recyclable.

When replacing a PET-based laminate, compare the exposed surfaces and overall construction as well as the barrier layer. Changes in thickness, stiffness, print finish or sealant formulation may accompany the redesign. A feeding difference should be investigated with those changes visible, rather than attributed to the BOPP name alone.

Ask for the right friction measurement

A coefficient-of-friction result needs its specimen pairing and method. Film against film, film against a metal surface and two different film faces are different comparisons. State which pair is being tested and whether the observation concerns the start of movement or continued sliding.

For an incoming laboratory comparison, maintain consistent conditioning, direction and sample preparation. If the process problem is strongly linked to a particular counter-surface, agree an additional relevant comparison with the testing team. Do not re-label a convenient film-to-film result as proof of traction against the actual drive belt.

The public product page does not establish a complete friction specification for this application. Request selected-grade data and discuss the finished laminate with the converter. Avoid supplying a numerical target copied from an unrelated film because its low value appears attractive in a purchasing table.

Include storage and surface evolution

Compare material at the point in its life when the feeding problem occurs. Freshly laminated web, conditioned finished rolls and stored printed material may not have the same relevant surface condition. Record production and storage history so a change with time can be investigated rather than hidden inside a batch label.

If the selected sealant contains a slip system, ask its supplier about the intended behavior and handling conditions. Do not assume that the metallized BOPP controls migration or surface development in an adjacent formulation. The complete construction needs review when line behavior changes after storage.

Contamination can also change the contact. Inspect rollers and the exposed web for residue, loose material or other deposits using the site's established maintenance procedure. Compare clean and affected conditions where practical. Repeatedly adjusting tension without examining the contact surface can make the original cause harder to identify.

Build a machine trial that shows where the problem starts

Run the candidate and an accepted reference under a documented setup. Keep product format, guide arrangement and relevant machine settings comparable. Record observations at unwind, drive and forming positions instead of reporting only whether the bagger reached a particular speed.

Observe startup and normal running separately. The force needed to initiate motion may not produce the same behavior as continuous sliding. A short demonstration at steady speed can miss intermittent feed hesitation, while a startup event alone may exaggerate a problem that does not persist during normal operation.

Inspect the finished package after any feeding adjustment. Changes intended to improve transport can affect registration, seal position or web damage. Stable motion is useful only if the package still meets its appearance, barrier and closure requirements. Do not accept a mechanical improvement that merely moves the defect to another operation.

For a sample inquiry, send Cailong the layer drawing, exposed surface identity and location of the slipping or dragging contact. Include the counter-surface, storage history and observations from the accepted reference. This allows the film and converting teams to discuss a measurable problem. Metallized BOPP can contribute barrier to a redesigned package, while the correct surface pairing and machine evidence establish whether the complete laminate feeds consistently through the intended line.
