Metallized BOPP Film: Sealing-Jaw Pickup

Oct 31,2026 | FOSHAN CAILONG METALLIC PACKAGING MATERIAL CO.,LTD

metallized BOPP film may be used as the barrier web inside a wrapper, yet the line can begin sticking at the sealing jaws after initially running well. Operators may blame the metallic layer because the affected laminate contains metallized BOPP. Before changing the barrier material, identify what touches the jaw and what the deposit actually contains. Ink transfer, a soft outer surface and squeezed-out sealant require different investigations.

Cailong's film portfolio includes high-barrier metallized BOPP for laminated packaging. The product page describes its use as an intermediate barrier layer in three-layer structures. In that arrangement, the aluminum surface is not automatically the face contacting the hot equipment. The complete laminate and its orientation need to be traced before the visible residue can be assigned to a particular material.

Preserve the deposit before cleaning the evidence away

Record where pickup appears on the jaw and on the web. Photograph its position relative to the seal, artwork and laminate edge. Note the run length, number of cycles and operating state when sticking begins. A deposit that grows during steady running may have a different cause from a mark appearing only after an extended pause with the web near a hot surface.

Use the machine supplier's approved procedure for stopping, cooling and cleaning. Retain a suitable residue sample if analysis is needed, along with an unused laminate sample. Do not identify a silver-looking mark as aluminum by appearance alone. A mixture of print, coating and polymer can be difficult to recognize, especially after repeated heat exposure on the equipment.

Draw the layers at the jaw contact

Identify the outside web, print position, adhesive, metallized BOPP and sealant. Show which face contacts each jaw during the sealing cycle. Reverse-printed ink buried in a laminate presents a different contact arrangement from exposed surface printing. If different seal areas bring different faces together, map those areas separately rather than using one generic layer diagram.

Check the actual roll orientation on the line. A web can be threaded incorrectly or a converted laminate can be supplied with a different winding arrangement from the trial stock. Confirm using the approved identification method. A correct material specification does not compensate for an inverted contact arrangement, and adjusting temperature may temporarily conceal the underlying orientation error.

Separate outer-surface transfer from sealant escape

Look for a relationship between pickup and printed zones. If residue follows particular ink coverage, inspect the relevant outer coating or printing system with its supplier. Compare an agreed unprinted area under equivalent conditions if that trial is practical. The objective is to identify the constituent involved, not to assume that every printed color or every metallized web behaves the same way.

If residue concentrates at the edge of a seal, examine whether sealant is being displaced beyond the intended joint. Jaw alignment, pressure distribution and the chosen sealing conditions belong in that review. Also inspect laminate edges and local defects that could expose an internal layer. A metal-containing deposit at an exposed edge does not prove that the entire barrier surface is transferring through an intact outer web.

Measure the cycle rather than quoting one setpoint

Record jaw temperature, contact time, pressure arrangement and line speed using the methods approved for the machine. A displayed temperature describes the controller's measurement location, which may differ from the contact condition at the web. Check calibration or equipment condition when justified by the symptoms. Avoid treating a setpoint copied from another wrapper as a qualified recipe for the current laminate.

Include start-stop behavior. A paused machine can expose a web section differently from continuous production. Release timing and downstream support also affect whether the fresh seal is pulled while hot. Describe the stage at which the pack sticks or distorts, because that observation can distinguish jaw release from a later handling problem or inadequate hot-tack behavior.

Review tooling surfaces with the equipment supplier

Inspect the condition and cleanliness of the jaw facing, release covering or other contact components used by the machine. Wear, damaged edges or accumulated residue can alter local contact. Follow the equipment supplier's guidance for acceptable materials and replacement. Do not introduce an unapproved release spray that could transfer to the package or interfere with seals and printing.

Compare a clean baseline with the point where deposits begin to accumulate. Record whether cleaning restores stable operation and for how long. That information helps define the investigation, but frequent cleaning is not by itself a material qualification. The converter still needs to identify why residue forms and whether the chosen process can remain stable through a normal production run.

Keep barrier and seal performance in the trial

If a change reduces pickup, check that it has not weakened the package. A lower temperature may improve release while leaving the sealing layer insufficiently joined. A changed outer coating could affect printing or lamination. Inspect seal integrity and relevant mechanical behavior, then evaluate barrier where the change or observed damage makes it necessary.

The metallized BOPP film contributes a barrier function, but its description does not provide a universal jaw-release limit for every laminate. Keep grade, coating faces and construction fixed during a controlled comparison. When the converter changes a component, identify that change explicitly so the result can be repeated rather than attributed vaguely to a better metallized film.

Make a technical enquiry that identifies the contact problem

Send the supplier the layer diagram, jaw-contact face, sealing-cycle details and photographs of the deposit locations. Include the point in the run where pickup begins and the effect of cleaning. These records let Cailong, the converter and the relevant ink or sealant supplier address the actual interface. The result should be a stable sealing process with retained package performance and a known source of any residue.
