Metallized BOPP Film: Cold-Seal Wrapper Trials

Oct 29,2026 | FOSHAN CAILONG METALLIC PACKAGING MATERIAL CO.,LTD

A heat-sensitive confectionery product may lead a converter to consider cold sealing, but choosing Metallized BOPP Film does not supply that function by itself. The barrier web and the cold-seal system are separate parts of the wrapper. Identify which surface receives the coating and how the coated areas meet before treating the material as ready to run on a cold-seal packaging line.

Cailong lists its metallized BOPP in Cailong's film portfolio for barrier laminate development, including PP-based packaging projects. The supplied brochure confirms that material family. This supports evaluation of the film for product protection. It does not establish that the offered roll includes a cold-seal coating, release treatment or adhesive formulation approved for the proposed wrapper.

Define the function being added

Henkel's overview of flexible-packaging coatings distinguishes cold-seal coatings activated by pressure from heat-seal systems. It identifies temperature-sensitive confectionery among the uses of that technology. This is a useful reason to discuss the process, but it is not evidence that a particular coating will perform on Cailong's film without evaluation.

Start with the product's packing requirements and the reason for avoiding the existing sealing approach. State the required package shape, opening behavior and line conditions. A request for cold-seal film should identify whether the supplier is being asked for a coated finished web or a barrier component that another converter will coat. That supply boundary affects both qualification and quotation.

Draw the exposed coating surface

Mark the metallized face, base-film face and any laminate layers in the proposed construction. The cold-seal coating may contact a surface other than the deposited aluminum. A description such as metallized BOPP wrapper is insufficient to define that interface. Provide the cross section and the actual coating location to the film and adhesive suppliers.

If the coating is proposed on an exposed metal surface, ask explicitly what evidence supports that arrangement. If it is proposed on another layer, identify that layer instead of attributing its behavior to the metallized component. Good attachment of aluminum to BOPP does not establish attachment of every additional coating to whichever face the converter selects.

Keep the coating pattern aligned with the pack

A pattern-applied cold seal must meet the intended opposing area after forming. Record the design around longitudinal and end seams and the transitions between them. A sample that seals on a flat laboratory strip may fail to reproduce the geometry of a wrapped product. Use the commercial layout in the final trial.

Check positioning under the intended printing, coating and wrapping sequence. If a coating edge approaches a fold or moves outside the sealing area, the package result can change without a change in polymer or adhesive chemistry. Retain representative samples from the actual process so the investigation can distinguish registration from a problem at the coating interface.

Evaluate attachment and sealing separately

The coating must remain appropriately attached to its substrate, and the mating coated areas must form the required joint. Those are different functions. Observe which surface separates when a specimen opens. A low measured force could involve substrate attachment, the joined coating surfaces or another layer in the wrapper. Record the failure location alongside the result.

Avoid solving every weak joint by increasing applied pressure. First establish that the coating, preparation and geometry match the intended system. Follow the relevant suppliers' processing guidance and agree on a controlled trial. The metallized BOPP information does not supply a universal coating weight, pressure setting or dwell time for cold-seal operation.

Include winding and unwinding

The coated web must reach the wrapping operation in usable condition. Identify what contacts the cold-seal surface while the roll is wound and whether a release function is required in the selected construction. Confirm the actual supplied treatments. A general surface-finish description should not be treated as proof of release compatibility.

Inspect the web after the relevant storage and unwind sequence. Record unintended adhesion, coating transfer or another observed change, with its location and conditions. A coating that performs on a freshly prepared sheet has not necessarily established acceptable roll behavior. Conversely, an unwind problem should be investigated at its contact interface rather than immediately assigned to the barrier film.

Check the filled wrapper

Use the intended product or a suitable representative form and evaluate the required opening and handling behavior. Keep closure integrity distinct from consumer opening force. A joint can be easy to open for the wrong reason, while a very strong joint may not meet the intended user experience. Define both requirements with the customer before interpreting the trial.

Also verify the barrier and appearance outcomes required by the brief. Cold sealing does not itself prove oxygen or moisture protection, and a metallized web does not prove a complete, continuous closure. Evaluate the converted package with suitable methods. Keep the data linked to the exact film, adhesive, pattern and process that produced it.

Confirm the coating's application scope

Keep the selected coating's product-contact and use documentation with the wrapper specification where required by the application. A successful mechanical seal does not establish those separate requirements. Confirm the actual offered formulation and construction with the relevant suppliers, rather than borrowing approval from another cold-seal product or packaging format.

Compare the complete conversion route

If cold sealing is proposed to replace a heat-sealed wrapper, include added coating, release requirements and process changes in the comparison. Any commercial advantage should be based on the accepted construction and actual operation. Do not promise faster output, lower energy use or less product damage from a material name without the project evidence needed to support it.

Send Cailong the layer drawing, proposed coating face and packaging requirement, and involve the coating supplier in the trial. The useful purchasing decision separates a barrier-film offer from a finished cold-seal web and approves the interfaces the package actually uses. Metallized BOPP can then contribute its defined protection role within a qualified wrapper system.
